NSW Semester 2 reporting checklist: end of Term 4
End-of-year NSW reporting checklist: consistent A–E judgements, forward-looking next steps, word limits and SENTRAL export checks before reports go home.
This page is a practical summary of publicly available guidance. Always follow your school's reporting template and professional judgement.
Quick compliance checklist
- Judgements reflect end-of-year evidence against syllabus standards, on balance.
- An A–E achievement grade is recorded for each key learning area taught (Years 1–10).
- Comments include forward-looking next steps grounded in current evidence (no predictions or promises).
- Attendance data and social development indicators are completed where the school includes them.
- The report format matches Semester 1 (format changes between semesters are not encouraged).
End-of-year checks that prevent surprises
- Confirm moderation outcomes so grades are consistent across classes and stages.
- Re-check judgements against the full year’s evidence, not just the final assessment task.
- Ensure Kindergarten reports remain effort-only (High/Satisfactory/Low) with descriptive comments — no A–E grades.
- For Years 11–12, follow school HSC/RoSA assessment procedures rather than the K–10 A–E format.
Handover-friendly next steps
- Write one next step that can be actioned early next year.
- Name a strategy or support that worked this semester, in plain English.
- Keep it concise so the comment stays usable for the next teacher and parent.
Examples
- "[Student] has made steady progress in Mathematics this year and explains her strategies with growing confidence. A strong start next year will come from continuing to practise multiplication facts and using estimation to check answers."
Final checks (fast)
- Names, spelling and grammar checked; the report is issued without corrections.
- Every KLA taught has a grade (and effort rating where used); sub-strands not studied are marked accordingly.
- No identical copy-paste comments across students; no comparisons between students.
- SENTRAL export ready: plain text, no line breaks mid-sentence, within character limits.
After reports go home
- Offer parents and carers an opportunity to meet after reports are issued.
- Archive reports and record next-year follow-ups (personalised plans, EAL/D phases, learning support notes).
